Acceptance and Commitment Therapy
Acceptance and commitment therapy also known as ACT is a type of psychotherapy that recognises that facing challenges is an inevitable part of life and that as human beings were are, at times, inevitably going to experience unwanted things such as physical pain and discomfort and difficult emotions such as sadness, anger or fear.
Rather than aiming to avoid unwanted experiences ACT focuses on teaching skills that enable us to cope more effectively with the challenges that life presents us with.
In ACT, there is a focus on connecting with what matters most to you. This helps you to align your actions with your values and to move towards where you really want to be.
ACT also focuses on present moment awareness and learning to engage with your ‘observing self.’ By learning how to be more present we can free ourselves up from ruminating about the past or feeling anxious about what the future might hold.
