EMDR Therapy
What is EMDR?
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing Therapy (EMDR for short) is an experiential model of therapy that involves using a technique known as bilateral stimulation to engage the brain’s inherent adaptive information processing system to process distressing events.
What is EMDR used for?
EMDR was developed as a treatment for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and trauma but over the past 20 years it has been more widely used to successfully treat other mental health conditions including; anxiety, specific phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder, depression, low self-esteem and even addictions.
Is EMDR safe?
EMDR is a very well researched and evidence-based therapeutic approach. It is considered safe but a good EMDR therapist will work with you to ensure that you are adequately prepared before you engage in the desensitising and reprocessing phases of the EMDR protocol as this can bring up uncomfortable emotions for people.
